Turntable Convert
How do i convert all my dads’ old vinyl to mp3? Do i need cables/ special software from the turntable 2comp?

Special software needed that i can download?

Special cables i need 2 attach 2 my computer? USB etc?

If there is a headphone socket on your record player then it’s easy. You will need a cable with a stereo jack plug (3.5mm) at each end. You will also need a recording programme, I use audiograbber which is a free download. Then plug the cable into the headphone socket on the tape, and the line in socket behind your computer. Start Audograbber and under file select line in sampling. Start off with the record player volume fairly low and adjust till the recording levels are OK just to test. Then simply record to your computer. There are some software packages available which remove pops and crackles but I don’t know any free ones. If you wish to convert to MP3 you will need an encoder, the instructions for downloading this are in Audiograbber. Hope this helps

Not enough stylus pressure on my old turntable?

I have quite an old turntable at home and really no clue what type it is etc, but I sometimes have problems with my Pink Floyd LP’s skipping. I’ve checked for solutions online, and there people suggest to adjust the stylus pressure/anti-weight, but my old turntable doesn’t have these options, it’s just the needle and the arm, nothing to adjust. When I apply very little pressure to the needle the music plays just fine, so I’m sure it’s a pressure issue, what is the best way to go around and fix this?

I’ve heard of taping a penny on to add weight.

Why doe’s the styli needle jump on my 12″?

What cables are needed to record old LPs into PC files?

I have an old stereo system that has a working turntable, and I would like to transfer LP tracks to my laptop. The only sound input is the mike input, as in most PCs. And the stereo system’s only outputs are from the turntable (very small signal), the headphones’ output, and the one to the cassette recorder.

Can I connect any of these outputs to the laptops’ mike input? If not, do I need any extra hardware?

I just don’s want anything get burned, except eventually some CDs.

I have downloaded Audacity in order to record and edit the music, and Lame MP3 to encode. Has anyone used this software? What do you think of it?

Thanks in advance for your help.

I’ve done this a bunch of times before, and what I found is to get decent sound quality, you need to run the cables from your turntable to a preamp, then run the cables from your preamp to the line input on your computers soundcard. Without using a preamp, the volume levels on the audio files were way too low, and when I tried to increase the volume through digital plugins, the files got hissey. I used Logic for the audio program, it works very very well.
