mid ’40’s Sparton Radio/phono question?

Hope there are some antique radio buffs out there…I have a mid 1940’s Sparton radio/phonograph…..the thing works perfectly except that the phono produces no sound (or very little sound) I tried a new needle …I know the speakers are ok cause the radio sounds fine…any ideas? These old tube radios are a mystery to me…I just like refinishing the cabinets….thanks.

I’m with you. I’ve got some beautiful radios and a Victrola that won’t play a sound – but look pretty.

There’s a number of places on the web where you can find a directory to an old bent-over, bearded guy with an old tube tester who can still fix vacuum tube sets. Go for it – or not, and just gaze at it ;<)

Remember when you'd go to the pharmacy and test your tubes!?

Here's one, there are many others:

He was a prolific producer of rebounds and record albums. And nicknames, too, as if at 7-foot-1 and 350 pounds he was too big for the simple “Shaq” that made him an instantly recognizable, one-name star in all of his endeavors.

Descent record player/turntable?

How much would a pretty good turntable cost that’s not gonna ruin my records? Some people say you need a good cartridge or something and that costs a lot of money. Don’t recommended anything in a high price range cause I most likely wont buy it. All I want to do is play my records with a descent sound and not get the needle to ruin them.

Player Turntable
Playing a record player/turntable thru a stereo system?

I have a Sony LBT-ZT4 stereo through which I’d like to play a record player/turntable. I’m wondering what I’d need to look for in a record player/turntable in order for this to work. The inputs on the stereo are a mini-stereo and a 1/4″ stereo that is amplified (i.e. I can play my guitar through it). So would I be able to play a turntable without a preamp through the amplified input? Or would I need a turntable with a preamp, even though the input is amplified? I really don’t wanna buy a receiver or any other components. I don’t know that much about stereo equipment and all that stuff, and I know almost nothing about turntables except that I like how they sound… Also, I’d love some suggestions about nice, sub-$100 turntables (new or used) and any personal experience people have with connecting record players to stereo sets. Thanks!!!!

Phonograph records are recorded with what is called an RIAA curve, this is done so the bass does not distort and the treble sounds clean and because of the limitations of vinyl as a recording media you need a phonograph pre-amp that will re-equalize the curve for a flat out put, otherwise it will sound tinny with very little bass and an exaggerated treble…some record players have this built in others do not…you can purchase an external phono pre-amp at radio shack or other electronic stores…

if you have a coin placed on a stereo record making 33.3 revolutions per min, what is the direction of accel?

a coin is placed on a vinyl stereo record that makes 33.3 revolutions per minute on a turntable.
A) what is the direction of acceleration of the coin?
B) what is the force accelerating the coin?
C) find the magnitude of acceleration when coin is placed 5.0, 10.0, and 15.0 cm from the center.
D) at which of the three radii would the coin most likely fly off? why?

A) toward the center of the turntable
B) friction of the coin on the record
C) a = w^2 r

w = 33.3 rpm = 33.3 * 2pi /60 = 3.487 rad/s

w^2 =12.16

12.16 * 0.05 = 0.608 m/s^2

12.06 * 0.1 = 1.216 m/s^2

12.06 * 0.15 = 1.824 m/s^2

D) 15 cm. Friction is least like to supply the highest acceleration.
